This piece was the third work I made for my Neon Body series—my first collection of neon artworks, centered around glowing facial features designed to animate the interior of a space.
Each piece was created to live in domestic settings—not as decoration, but as presence. Eyes, mouths, ears rendered in neon became active companions on the walls. Together, they suggested that the home isn’t passive. It sees, listens, and holds energy.
The work is influenced by my Japanese heritage and the Shinto belief that kami—spirit—exists in all things. Neon Body was a way of making that felt sense visible. By placing body parts onto walls, I invited a shift in perception: that our environments are alive with us. Watching. Witnessing. Responding.
Rendered in bold neon, the nose is a quiet but powerful presence. Scent is our most emotionally charged sense—closely tied to memory and intuition. This piece brings that invisible current to the surface, reminding us that space is not just seen or heard, but deeply felt.
